What the research can tell us
Ketamine has been studied for treatment-resistant depression. A 2023 randomized trial compared intravenous ketamine with electroconvulsive therapy in adults with nonpsychotic treatment-resistant major depression. Its findings do not establish that every patient, every diagnosis or every ketamine route will respond in the same way.
Ketamine and esketamine are different
Ketamine is used off-label for psychiatric conditions. Spravato is esketamine, an FDA-approved nasal spray with specific adult depression indications and a certified treatment-setting requirement. Read the official Spravato information with your clinician. The FDA warning about compounded ketamine addresses important risks, including use without on-site monitoring.
Who should discuss treatment with a clinician?
A clinician should review your diagnosis, previous treatments, medication list, psychiatric and cardiovascular history, substance-use risks and follow-up needs. Benefit is not guaranteed and a directory listing is not an endorsement. Ask how treatment response is measured and what happens if symptoms return or treatment does not help.
Practical care planning in New Mexico
Confirm the exact office address, treatment route, clinical supervision and repeat-visit schedule. Spravato requires at least two hours of observation; do not drive until the next day after restful sleep. Follow clinic-specific discharge instructions for other routes. Ask for a written estimate and confirm individual benefits and prior authorization rather than assuming insurance coverage.
